Mikey VS My Dogs- Who's Better? by Alena Picinic (September Blog)
Okay, so I couldn't figure out what to write
about for my first blog post. It took a couple of weeks until I started to
spitball ideas with my friend that made me realize I should write a 'who's
better' type of piece. So in this competition, we have my 3 dogs, Pierce, Bella,
and Toby against Juliette Sanchez's cat, Mikey. My dogs will have to come in a
package, they are a team and will obviously always win in my heart! :)
Mikey’s
Story:
Mikey was born on a farm in upstate New York. In New York, Mikey was more
of an outdoor cat, rather than a house cat- he was very aggressive in nature.
Sometimes he would come back with scratches from
fights with beavers. Juliette’s grandfather took him in, but couldn’t come to continue taking care of him. Her grandfather then offered Juliette’s father, in Spanish, an opportunity to have Mikey live in the Sanchez household. Her father didn’t really side with the idea of having a cat in the house. Her grandfather then asked Juliette’s mother in English after her father specifically said not to ask Juliette's mom. She obviously couldn't miss out on such an amazing opportunity of having another cat, so Mikey ended up living in the Sanchez house after that fateful day. Because he was an outdoor cat in New York, he would roam outside the Sanchez's yard. One time Juliette recalls him arriving back with a ripped off chipmunk tail. Since the incidents, Mikey was trained to change his ways and become an indoor cat. He is now more of a human cat than an animal cat. Mikey absolutely enjoys being around people. He even rubs himself on people he just met's legs to pet himself. It's so adorable!

Pierce’s Story:
When we first
saw him at the shelter, he was small and stood out to us- he was the only puppy
in his litter that had white fur, the rest of his siblings had black fur. In the
room with Pierce and all of his siblings, Pierce
was the only puppy that wasn’t tugging on our shoelaces and running around in circles. He was perfect. My sister, Ava, and I were 100% on board with getting Pierce. My mom slowly hopped on our train, as long as we agreed to help with the basic chores and responsibilities of having a puppy. My dad wasn’t so glad with the idea of getting a puppy, but we begged and promised we would help with Pierce. He eventually said yes and we signed the papers. Pierce was our new puppy! Once we had Pierce for a bit, he started getting too comfortable and was naughty. One time he got caught up in chicken wire fencing from our backyard, he dug up our flowers, he constantly takes our socks, and goes in places he isn’t supposed to! Another time, he went into our fireplace and came out with soot all over him- he’s definitely a character! Since then, he has calmed down a lot and he’s eight now. I love snuggling with him because he’s the perfect medium size and he loves playing catch with tennis balls.

Toby & Bella’s Story:
This is Toby (on left, darker brown/black fur) and Bella
(on right, light brown, fluffy fur). The holidays were approaching and my
parents said they had a surprise for us the upcoming weekend, as long as we
behaved. All week, I was curious to know what the surprise could be and why they
couldn’t wait for Christmas. That
Sunday, after a cheerleading competition, I was watching television with my mom and sister, then my mom’s phone notified her that she received a text. She called for my dad and they told us to stay put as they excitedly went out the door. I ran over to the window with Ava to see a red car in our driveway as snow started to fall from the clouds. I then see my mom holding something, trying to get inside quickly, my dad soon after with another, and a woman following them. When my mom opened the door, I saw a puppy in her arms, then my dad walked in with another! We played with the puppies, while my parents talked about adopting one of them with the woman. Their names were Joy and Toby. I fell in love with Joy, and Ava fell in love with Toby. My parents were aiming to only get one puppy because we already had Pierce, but we couldn’t decide and adopted both of them. I re-named Joy to Bella and Ava kept Toby’s name. All night we played with Bella and Toby and were grateful enough that the next day, we had a delayed opening for school, so we got more time to be with our new pets!

Go ahead and vote whose pet you think is
better! (vote either "Mikey" or "Bella/Pierce/Toby")
While I may be just a little, tiny bit biased, I have to say Mikey is the superior pet. I do love your dogs, especially Bella, but nothing compares to a cat sitting on your lap purring. Mikey is our fierce defender, even after giving up his life of crime in NY with the beavers. He's really adjusted to the indoor cat life. He doesn't try to escape outside the way he use to (Stockholm syndrome?), but he is sure to scare aware any potential mice or chipmunks, and he has the tails to prove it. As I'm sure you can attest to, Alena, he comes out to say hello to everyone at the house. He loves to be loved! My grandpa still visits him a lot, and even my dad has come to love the pet he didn't want!
