                                                        Thoughts about Hilton Head Island

During summer vacation I went to Hilton Head Island. My family and I have always wanted to explore Hilton Head. Most people who have gone there rave about it and some even return year after year.  We wanted to go last summer, however, due to Covid, my parents decided that we would just vacation at our usual spot in Cape May.  Now that my whole family has had their vaccinations we decided it would be the perfect time to go. We went by plane and it was a quick flight, only about an hour and a half.

Welcome to Hilton Head, SC! The Official Travel & Tourism Guide to Hilton

When we arrived in Hilton Head we were initially shocked to see how many other people were also on the island. After thinking about it, I guess it makes sense.  People are so tired of staying home during quarantine that I think they relished the opportunity to finally get away. That night my family and I went to Krogers, which is their local supermarket and it was so jammed packed that the lines went from the front of the store to the back.  We worried that maybe this would not be an enjoyable getaway after all. We were very relieved the following day when we went to the beach and saw open stretches of sand with no crowding at all.  The beach was definitely the most memorable and special part of Hilton Head.  The beach is very wide and flat.  The sand is compacted and hard, which makes it easy to ride a bike.  Every day the water was the same, shallow with no waves.  We could walk way out and the water would only reach the top of our legs.  Definitely different than the Jersey shore!  If someone enjoys surfing or boogey boarding then Hilton Head would not be their spot.  The waves were always small and calm.  My family prefers this so we visited the beach every day.

We also enjoyed visiting the lighthouse.  Most pictures of Hilton Head show the lighthouse.  It was pretty and easy to walk up to the top to look out.  The view of the water bogs all around and the island was awesome.  Of course, no visit to Hilton Head is complete without mentioning the fantastic restaurants. My parents enjoyed delicious seafood.  I'm not a fan of seafood but we also went to a fantastic locally famous Barbeque restaurant called One Hot Mama and  I enjoyed their ribs and chicken.

My final thoughts about Hilton Head are to recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing beach vacation with plenty of sightseeing and great restaurants to explore.  It was easy to get there and I am hoping that we can return someday!
